Monster Fonts run the whole range here, from creatures a five-year-old would hug to a row of human skulls. What they share is that somebody actually built the things: eyes are set into the letterform instead of pasted on top, fur lies in a direction, slime pools where slime would pool. Pick by how much you intend to frighten the reader, not by which one looks most like a monster.

Monster Fonts Are Not Only for October

Halloween is the obvious season, and these cover the whole run of it — party invitations, pub posters, costume-shop windows, the supermarket end-cap. The cute half earns its keep all year round, though: childrens books, cereal packaging, kids TV titles, birthday parties, classroom material. The nasty half goes to horror posters, metal and punk sleeves, escape rooms, haunted attractions and game interfaces. Choose by audience rather than by season.

Install It, Type It, Done

Every one here is a genuine OpenType font rather than a folder of pictures, so a headline takes exactly as long as typing it. Separate transparent PNGs of each character come along too, at a size that still holds up when one letter has to fill a poster.
